SKILLS FOR LOGISTICS SIGNS COLLABORATION DEAL

WITH SEMTA

Skills for Logistics, the sector skills council for the freight logistics industry, has today (30 September) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Semta, the Sector Skills Council for the science, engineering and manufacturing technologies sectors. The MoU will target the identification of current and future skills needs for the logistics sector and address them by collaborative working, particularly where there are areas of current overlap.

Dr Mick Jackson, Chief Executive of SfL said ‘The partnership agreement will enable Semta and SfL to work together to offer employers a combined skills solution for manufacturing and the wider supply chain.’

Semta Chief Executive Philip Whiteman said ‘Logistics plays a key role in lean manufacturing and just in time component delivery and by working together we can support manufacturers across a wider range of skills.’

The partnership agreement will involve quarterly meetings between chief executives; the appointment of directors from each organisation to implement the partnership; the appointment of functional teams to carry out the work; engagement with other sector skills councils; and the implementation of joint activities including conferences, events and trade fairs where joint representation will be appropriate.

A key initial project will be the development of a plan for joint employer engagement with small SMEs.

The new Memorandum of Understanding, the first of which SfL has entered into with another sector skills council, will initially consider joint actions throughout the rest of 2010 and 2011.
